Overview

A fraud and credit risk score built to sit on top of what you already have

Most lenders already have a scoring model — a bureau score, an internal credit model, a fraud rules engine. The problem isn't a lack of a score; it's that the score was built on limited data, and it makes two kinds of mistakes: approving applicants who default early, and declining good applicants who would have paid on time. Smile's fraud and risk scoring product is built to correct both, not replace the model you already trust.

It works by combining 700+ signals — identity verification results, device and location intelligence, behavioral patterns, and income data — into a single score, then applying two-way risk calibration against your existing decisioning: reject applications your current model would have approved but that carry hidden risk, and approve applications it would have declined but that Smile's broader signal set shows are actually low-risk. The same signals also surface early payment default (EPD) risk — patterns like digital-identity age and device-to-address distance that correlate with a borrower missing payments shortly after disbursement — so that risk is visible before money moves, not after.

Coverage varies by product. Lending-activity signals cover the Philippines, India, Mexico, Indonesia, Colombia, and Thailand, while email and mobile footprint checks are requested by country code.

What you get

Features

700+ signals, one score
Identity, device, location, behavioral, and income signals are combined into a single composite score in real time.
Two-way risk calibration
Layer the score on top of an existing credit or fraud model to catch risk it misses and recover good applicants it declines.
Early payment default (EPD) indicators
Digital-identity age, device-to-address distance, and account activity patterns surface EPD risk before disbursement.
Configurable decision thresholds
Set approve, decline, and manual-review cutoffs to match your own risk appetite, not a one-size-fits-all default.
Explainable signals
Every input to the score is visible and auditable, so risk and compliance teams can justify a decision, not just accept a black box.
Why it matters

Benefits

Approve more good applicants
Two-way calibration recovers applicants your current model rejects but who carry genuinely low risk, expanding approvals without loosening standards.
Catch risk your model can't see
Device, location, and behavioral signals surface fraud and default risk that credit history and identity checks alone miss.
Get ahead of early payment default
EPD risk indicators flag likely early-default borrowers before disbursement, not after the first missed payment.
No black-box decisions
Explainable, configurable scoring keeps every approve, decline, or review decision auditable for risk and compliance review.
FAQ

Common questions

What signals go into Smile's fraud and risk score?

The score draws on 700+ signals spanning identity verification results, device and location intelligence, income data, and behavioral patterns — combined into a single approve, decline, or review output rather than requiring a team to weigh each signal manually.

Does the risk score replace our existing credit or fraud model?

No — it's designed to run alongside your existing model rather than replace it. Two-way risk calibration lets you layer Smile's score on top of your current decisioning, catching risk your model misses while surfacing good applicants it might otherwise decline.

What is early payment default (EPD) risk, and how does the score account for it?

EPD is when a borrower misses a payment shortly after disbursement — often the first sign that underwriting missed something a bureau score alone couldn't see. Smile's scoring surfaces EPD risk indicators like digital-identity age, device-to-address distance, and account activity patterns, so that risk can factor into a decision before disbursement rather than after.

Can the score's thresholds be customized to our risk appetite?

Yes. Approve, decline, and review thresholds are configurable, and every underlying signal is explainable, so risk and compliance teams can audit exactly why a given score was returned.
